After opening, in 1864, the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara became popular among the Lisbon people, deserving even the visit of Queen Maria Pia, who was "amazed" by such work. As the night drew nearer and the gas lamps began to light the city, it became a meeting place for the seamstresses and the workers in the neighborhood, or the maidservants and the young men (“saloios” in Portuguese language), who came to the city to sell their products.
